Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty: What Is the Difference?

There are two main surgical approaches in rhinoplasty: open and closed. In both, the aim is a nose that is natural, harmonious with the face and able to breathe; the difference is how the surgeon accesses the nasal structure. Which technique suits you is determined by your nasal anatomy and the corrections needed at a medical examination.

Open Technique

In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is added across the strip of skin between the nostrils (columella) and the skin is lifted. This gives the surgeon a direct view of the bone and cartilage. It may be preferred for complex shape changes and revision surgery because it offers full control of the structure. The fine columellar scar fades over time.

Closed Technique

In closed rhinoplasty all incisions stay inside the nose, leaving no visible external scar. As less tissue is lifted, swelling may settle faster in some cases. The field of view is more limited than the open technique, so it is used in suitable cases.

Which Is Preferred?

There is no single superior technique; both can deliver natural results in experienced hands. The choice depends on your nose's structure, the extent of correction and the surgeon's assessment. A definitive decision is made after an in-person examination.
