Rhinoplasty Recovery Process

Rhinoplasty is a technically demanding procedure performed within the field of ENT and head-neck surgery. Recovery is as important as the surgery itself. We have compiled the most frequently asked questions here.

First 48 Hours

You will have a splint (plaster or thermoplastic) on your nose and often soft nasal packing. Mild headache, swelling around the eyes, and restricted nasal breathing are expected. Keep your head elevated at about 45 degrees. You will breathe through your mouth, so a lip balm helps.

Days 1–7: Splint and Packing Phase

Packing is typically removed on days 1–3, and the splint between days 7–10. During this week: - **Do not blow your nose.** If you sneeze, keep your mouth open. - Apply cold compresses to the cheeks and under-eye area — not the nose. - Eat soft foods. - Avoid glasses — the frame presses on cartilage.

Week 2: Social Return

After splint removal, most patients return to work. Bruising fades to yellow by days 10–14 and can be covered with concealer. International patients should stay in Istanbul for at least 7–10 days; travel after the check-up and splint removal.

Weeks 3–4: Gradual Normalisation

About 60–70 percent of swelling has resolved. Light walking is fine; pools, open water, and contact sports are not yet appropriate. Limit sun exposure.

Week 6: Glasses and Exercise

Light eyeglass use may be approved (with surgeon confirmation). A gradual return to intense exercise can begin; swimming is generally safe from weeks 6–8.

Month 3: Shape Coming Into Focus

The majority of swelling has subsided and the general form is visible. Fine details continue to settle. Continue SPF 50+.

6–12 Months: Final Result

The definitive appearance emerges between 6 and 12 months. Residual swelling in the tip and bridge resolves gradually as cartilage remodels. Patience at this stage directly affects long-term satisfaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

**When is it safe to fly?** Short-haul after splint removal and check-up, typically from day 8–10; for long-haul, wait until the end of week 2.

**When can I wear makeup?** Facial makeup is usually permitted from week 2; avoid pressure on the nose.

**When does swelling fully resolve?** About 80–90 percent within 3 months; the remaining subtle swelling over 6–12 months.

**How long must I avoid blowing my nose?** For the first 3–4 weeks, absolutely; do not resume until cleared by your surgeon.

The Value of ENT-Based Rhinoplasty

ENT and head-neck training means command over functional anatomy, not only aesthetics. Deviated septum or turbinate hypertrophy can be addressed in the same session — a meaningful long-term benefit for breathing alongside the visual result.
