
Tinnitus is the perception of noise or ringing in the ears when no external sound is present. It is a symptom, not a disease.
Causes
- Hearing loss (age-related or noise-induced)
- Earwax blockage
- Stress and anxiety
- TMJ disorders
- High blood pressure
Treatment
If an underlying cause is found, it is treated. In unknown cases: - Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) - Masking devices - Hearing aids - Cognitive behavioral therapy are used to help patients cope with ringing and improve quality of life.
