Septoplasty is a functional surgery dedicated to correcting a deviated septum—the cartilage and bone wall that divides the nasal cavity. A deviated septum can cause chronic nasal congestion, loud breathing, snoring, recurrent sinusitis, and sleep apnea, significantly impacting quality of life. During this procedure, the deviated portions of the septum are removed or straightened and repositioned to open the airways effectively. I'm travelling to Istanbul for septoplasty. How many days should I stay?
For international patients, a stay of about 5-7 days is usually planned. This allows time for the pre-operative examination, the surgery, and a first check-up once the internal splints are removed. The exact duration is set individually based on any combined procedures and your healing progress.
When can I fly after the surgery?
Air travel is generally possible around 7 days after surgery, once the splints have been removed and your surgeon approves. Because cabin pressure may cause discomfort in the early period, it is advisable to plan your return flight together with your doctor.
Is septoplasty performed under local or general anaesthesia?
Septoplasty is most often performed under general anaesthesia, although local anaesthesia with sedation may be an option for limited deviations. The anaesthesia method is decided jointly by the surgeon and anaesthesiologist according to the degree of deviation, any combined procedures, and your overall health.
Can septoplasty be combined with rhinoplasty or turbinate surgery in the same session?
Yes, septoplasty is frequently combined in a single session with aesthetic rhinoplasty (septorhinoplasty) or turbinate reduction. This addresses both the breathing problem and any cosmetic or allergy-related obstruction within one recovery period. Suitability is determined after examination.
Is an online evaluation possible before I come to Turkey?
Yes, an online preliminary assessment can be carried out before your trip using your photos and, if available, your CT or radiology reports. This consultation gives an initial idea of your condition, the likely scope of the procedure, and how long you may need to stay in Istanbul. A definitive diagnosis and plan are confirmed during the in-person examination.
