Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty addresses excess skin and fat in the upper or lower eyelids. Suitability depends on an assessment of eye health as well as appearance goals.

What Causes the Drooping?

Excess upper-lid skin, a lowered brow and muscle-related eyelid ptosis are different problems. Blepharoplasty alone may not correct them all; examination considers brow position, eyelid position and eye closure together.

Assessment Before Surgery

Report dry eyes, thyroid eye disease, diabetes, previous eye operations and medicines. An ophthalmologist assessment may be needed. Do not stop blood-thinning medication without discussing it with your doctor.

Upper Eyelid Approach

An incision may follow the natural eyelid crease; skin and fat removal are planned individually. The fold may make the scar less noticeable, but cannot guarantee an invisible scar. Anaesthesia depends on the procedure and health assessment.

Lower Eyelid and Support Procedures

An incision below the lashes or inside the lid (transconjunctival) may allow fat repositioning or reduction. An internal incision alone does not remove excess skin. Any required eyelid support is assessed separately; canthoplasty is not a routine addition for everyone.

Risks and Warning Signs

Discuss dryness, difficulty closing the eyes, asymmetry, noticeable scars, infection, bleeding and outward turning of the lower lid. Serious vision problems can occur rarely. Severe pain or an unexpected vision change after surgery needs urgent assessment.

Recovery and Consultation Questions

Swelling and bruising may occur. Obtain individual instructions for drops, ointment, contact lenses, make-up, work and exercise; there is no recovery day that suits everyone.
