Blepharoplasty reshapes selected skin, muscle or fat in the upper or lower eyelid. Excess skin must be distinguished from true eyelid ptosis, brow ptosis and ocular-surface problems. Upper and lower eyelid surgery are not the same procedure; incision, recovery, scar and risk vary with anatomy and technique.

Procedure Overview

Blepharoplasty reshapes selected skin, muscle or fat in the upper or lower eyelid. Excess upper-lid skin must be distinguished from true eyelid ptosis, brow ptosis and ocular-surface problems. Lower-lid fat prolapse, skin laxity and lid support are assessed together. Incision placement and tissue preservation or removal depend on examination; invisible scarring, perfect symmetry and freedom from dry-eye symptoms cannot be guaranteed.

Risks & Candidacy

Possible risks

Swelling, bruising, dryness and temporary blurred vision can occur. Possible risks include asymmetry, visible scarring, incomplete eyelid closure, lower-lid ectropion or retraction, infection and bleeding; vision-threatening complications are rare but urgent.

Who may not be a candidate

Excess upper-lid skin, true eyelid ptosis, brow ptosis and lower-lid fat prolapse are not the same problem. Dry eye, thyroid eye disease, medicines and visual symptoms are assessed, and upper and lower eyelids are planned separately.

Will my vision change?
Functional benefit is assessed only when upper-lid skin truly limits the visual field, sometimes with formal testing. Temporary blur can occur; sudden vision loss or severe eye pain requires urgent assessment.
Will there be a scar?
Blepharoplasty requires an incision. Placement follows eyelid anatomy, while scar colour, width and visibility vary with individual healing.
How long will the result last?
There is no fixed duration. Tissue quality, operative scope and healing affect the appearance, and natural ageing continues.
Should I have only the upper eyelids done, or both upper and lower together?
This depends on where the sagging and puffiness around your eyes are concentrated. In some people only excess skin on the upper lid is the issue, while in others under-eye fat bags on the lower lid are more prominent. Upper and lower eyelids can also be treated in the same session; whether this is needed is decided during the examination.
What type of anesthesia is used for eyelid surgery?
The procedure is often performed under local anesthesia, sometimes combined with sedation for added comfort. For more extensive combined procedures, general anesthesia may be preferred. The choice of anesthesia is planned according to the scope of the procedure and your overall health.
I am traveling from abroad. How many days should I stay in Istanbul?
The stay depends on upper, lower or combined eyelid surgery, suture and ocular-surface review, and healing. There is no fixed number of days that fits everyone; plan the return journey after the operative scope is confirmed.
When can I fly, and what should I be mindful of before the flight?
Fitness to fly is individual and depends on upper or lower eyelid scope, swelling, ocular surface, vision and review findings. Do not choose a fixed day yourself; use artificial tears or other medicines only as your clinician advises.
How does a remote online assessment work?
For patients coming from other cities or abroad, the process usually begins with photographs and a video call. This preliminary assessment covers the structure of the eye area, your expectations, and your general medical history. The online consultation is informational; final planning is completed after an in-person examination.

Recovery

Swelling, bruising, dryness and temporary blurred vision can occur. Suture review and return to work or flying vary with upper or lower eyelid scope and individual healing. Sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain or rapidly increasing one-sided swelling needs urgent assessment.
